Below are listed species recommended for beginners and schools for education and conservation. Prominent here are common native butterflies that can be reared and released to supplement and augment local populations.
Perrenial favourites include our own native Small Tortoiseshell (Aglais urticae) and Peacock (Inachis io) butterflies.
Purchased pupae can be layed at the bottom of net hanging or popup cages. Cages should be kept at room temperature or in cool out buildings, and must be kept out of direct sunlight to prevent the pupae from over heating and drying out. Your butterfly will emerge from the pupae and climb the side of the cage to expand and dry its wings.
