It has been suggested that the larvae of this North American species will take privet but we have found that success is more likely to be achieved on sumach, sweet gum and walnut, on which our larvae thrive. Regalis is a fascinating species (11-14cms) with a truly remarkable caterpillar (see other picture). Fully grown the caterpillars measure 10 cms and are magnificent and fearsome looking creatures. Very highly recommended for the moderately experienced breeder looking for something spectacular.
Larval foodplants: staghorn sumach (rhus), walnut (juglans), sweetgum (liquidamber), ash (fraxinus), sometimes privet (ligustrum) and others.
Rearing: plastic boxes, cages and sleeves in warmer, dryer climates.
