Sent when ready in June or July. The owl butterfly, pale owl or giant owl butterfly is one of the most spectacular examples of the large nymphalidae genus and is undoubtedly most famous for its startling underside, (shown in the cut-out species picture above), which it uses to startle predators with highly realistic eye type markings.
Memnon is found naturally from Mexico down to the Amazon rainforests, where adult insects are active at dusk, seeking out a variety of rotting fruits to take nectar. The larvae do well on musa species (banana) and are easy to rear, but will require large banana plants due to their voracious appetites. A superb display in any hothouse where the gregarious and relatively sedentary larvae are a fascinating site on the underside of banana leaves. A fine addition to our range of tropical species.
