Sent when ready in the Spring. The Spanish Moon Moth is widely regarded as the most beautiful example of lepidoptera in Europe and is arguably the most beautiful in the world. This fine saturniid only inhabits certain continental pine forests in mountainous regions of Spain, France and Switzerland, and due to its very localised distribution it is protected by law in the first two countries. The captive bred stock we have this year originates from the mountainous region of Sierra de Guadarrama, close to the spanish capital, Madrid.
The ground colour of the breathtaking adult is a type of metallic, pea-green, broken up with defined, reddish-brown veins and the moths take to the wing in the wild in May and June. In captivity, larvae do very well if sleeved outdoors on a scots pine, (pinus sylvestris) and once the newly emerged larvae has settled down to feed after a natural period of wandering, rearing is relatively straightforward. Misting the larvae during this stage may also be helpful.
Eggs of this species are sure to be very popular, so book early to avoid disappointment.
