Sent when ready in August (subject to availability). Another fantastic species that must be tried! It has been suggested that the larvae of this North American species will take privet but we have found that success is more likely to be achieved on sumach, sweet gum and walnut, on which our larvae thrive. Regalis is a fascinating species (11-14cms.) with a truly remarkable caterpillar (see picture opposite). Fully grown the caterpillars measure 10 cm's and are magnificent and fearsome looking creatures. Very highly recommended for the moderately experienced breeder looking for something spectacular.
Larval foodplants: staghorn sumach (rhus), walnut (juglans), sweetgum (liquidamber), ash (fraxinus), sometimes privet (ligustrum) and others.
Rearing: plastic boxes, cages and sleeves in warmer, dryer climates.
Photographs: egg showing fully developed larvae inside x 20 magnification; 2nd instar larvae at rest; 5th instar larvae on sweetgum (liquidamber); adult moth at rest.
