AFRICAN MOON MOTH | Argema mimosae (Cocoons)

Product Information

Currently unavailable. The african moon moth is a dramatic and impressive species that until quite recently has been quite difficult to obtain. In many ways it resembles its close relative the madagascan comet moth, with a similar yellow ground colouring and dramatic long tails. Pairing is not too difficult, but is certainly not automatic. The very attractive larvae will take readily to liquidamber (sweet gum) and eucalyptus gunni and once fully fed they spin a silvery white lattice style cocoon so designed to prevent the pupae inside from drowning.

Larval foodplants: walnut (juglans), sweetgum (liquidamber), Eucalyptus (gunni), staghorn sumach (rhus typhina)

Rearing: plastic boxes, vivariums and / or cages.

Photographs: male moth at rest.
