Product Information

Sent when ready from September (2012). The poplar hawk is one of our most widespread sphinigade and was once a common sight on railings and fences in suburban areas. On the wing in May and June, this species is easy to mass rear in ventilated cages or tubs kept in cool out-houses. Larvae take poplar, sallow, willow and I have also reared them successfully in their later stages on apple. Pairing is virtually guaranteed and the adults stay together throughout the next day in the familiar hawk moth pairing position. Attractive and fascinating in all its stages this is another UK sphinigade that is fun to rear and release. Highly recommended for schools and beginners.

 Larval foodplants: sallow; willow; poplar.

Rearing: plastic boxes, cages and sleeves.

Photographs: egg x 20 magnification; 2nd instar larvae; 5th instar larvae.
